This body of work explores the idea of home—not as a single place, but as a feeling shaped by memory, familiarity, and comfort. Each piece in this collection depicts a sight that evokes that sense of belonging for me. While deeply personal, these images are meant to resonate more broadly. We all carry visual landmarks that signal home: a field, a tower, a solitary tree, a bend in the river, or even a particular quality of light at a certain time of day. These moments anchor us and offer reassurance through recognition.
Through this collection, I have captured places drawn from my own experiences that hold emotional warmth and comfort. By working in an impressionistic style, I intentionally avoid precise definition. Instead, I suggest form through color, light, and atmosphere, allowing space for viewers to project their own memories onto the imagery. Some may recognize specific locations, while others may simply feel a sense of familiarity—connecting the work to places that feel comforting and personal to them.
This approach represents a significant shift from my earlier artistic practice. I earned my BFA from Coe College in 2005 with an emphasis in painting, initially focusing on abstraction and photo-realism. The work in this collection reflects a synthesis of those foundations. It merges my interest in color and light relationships from abstraction with the observational discipline of photo-realism. This balance has allowed me to loosen my hand, letting brushstrokes be guided by nuanced color interaction and contrasts of light and dark rather than rigid shapes.
Ultimately, this work invites viewers to slow down and reflect—to find their own sense of home within the imagery, whether rooted in a specific place or simply in a familiar feeling.
Thank you and please enjoy.
